Turning a product idea into something you can manufacture and sell requires moving through a structured process, which can vary depending on the nature of the product, but a typical sequence of stages is: validate the idea, protect your IP, design and develop the idea, build and test a prototype, refine it for manufacture and compliance, then commence production. This is a simplified sequence, and there may be multiple iterations of design refinement and prototype testing along the way, but these stages are generally consistent across most products.

This guide walks through each stage, including estimates on what it costs, how long it takes, and where things typically go sideways.
Start with the problem, not the product
Most people arrive with a solution already formed in their head. They've got a product, a name for it, sometimes a rough sketch or even a basic prototype. But often what they haven't done is spend real time on the underlying problem.
Before committing to any design budget, be able to answer a few basic questions. Who has this problem? How do they currently deal with it? Why would they switch to your version? What does the product need to cost at retail for the numbers to work?
None of this requires a market research firm.
Simply talking to people who match your target user is a highly useful form of research at this early stage. What you're listening for is whether the problem is real and consistent across different people, or whether it's mainly a problem you have.
A lot of products that stall midway through development stall because the brief was never tested against the market. Spending time on getting this right first is a worthy investment.
Protect your idea before sharing it with anyone
Before you take your concept to an industrial designer, engineer, or manufacturer, put confidentiality in place.
The standard mechanism is a non-disclosure agreement (NDA). Any reputable industrial design studio will sign one before you share details. At Concept Evolution we sign NDAs before initial consultations as standard.
Beyond NDAs, if your product has genuine technical novelty, a provisional patent application is worth exploring early. In Australia, provisional applications are lodged through IP Australia, the national body for intellectual property rights. A provisional filing costs relatively little, establishes your priority date, and gives you 12 months to develop the design before deciding whether to proceed with a full patent. We always recommend people look at this before they start sharing details widely.

How to turn a product idea into a real product: a practical guide for Australian inventors and startups
Before anything gets drawn
Good design starts with definition. What does the product need to do, functionally and commercially? What's the target retail price? What manufacturing volume are you planning? Are there compliance or regulatory requirements? These decisions shape everything downstream, and changing a fundamental requirement once the design is well into the development phase can require additional time and expense.
Concept design: more directions than most clients expect
An industrial designer typically generates multiple directions, often using a combination of hand sketching, basic 3D CAD modelling, and 3D rendering to explore different ways to solve the problem.
The final direction may include a combination of features from different concepts to get the right balance of form, function, manufacturability, and appeal for the people who'll use it.
A good industrial designer should articulate any pros and cons of the different concepts clearly enough that allows all stakeholders to make a confident call.
3D CAD: the essential tool that drives development
Once a direction is agreed, it gets refined into a more detailed 3D CAD model. Physical prototypes come from this file. Engineering drawings are generated from it. Manufacturer’s quotes are based on it.
It is both a visual asset, used for product renderings and marketing material, and a technical asset used for essential manufacturing documentation. As they say, the devil is in the detail, and detailing even a relatively ‘basic’ product takes time, but it is a vital investment in overall project success.
Don’t worry if the first prototype has problems. That's what it's for.
The first prototype is almost never the finished product.
Usually, it reveals some areas for improvement. A grip that looks great in the CAD model feels slightly off in your hand. A mechanism that worked in theory creates an assembly problem in practice. A material spec needs adjusting to suit manufacturing. Identifying these issues early through prototype testing can save a lot of time and money compared to identifying them further down the line.
Projects involving tight tolerances or complex mechanisms can take a significant amount of prototype testing and refinement, but even relatively ‘simple’ products go through multiple prototype iterations before the design is sufficiently validated to proceed towards mass production.

DFM: where manufacturing experience counts
Once prototyping is complete, the design gets refined specifically for the manufacturing processes being used. Wall thicknesses. Draft angles. Assembly sequences. This is where the gap between a designer with real manufacturing experience and one without becomes obvious very quickly.
DFM decisions made at this stage can save significant tooling and production costs. If DFM is not adequately considered, this can require time-consuming design changes, and/or costly modifications to tooling. At Concept Evolution, we pride ourselves on our manufacturing experience and close relationships with manufacturers, so DFM considerations are happening throughout the design process rather than as a remediation step afterwards.

What it actually costs to develop a product in Australia
A very common question, and the range is naturally very broad due to the variable nature of different products.
Getting from idea to production-ready files, covering design, CAD, and DFM, typically falls between $15,000 and $60,000 for a product of moderate complexity. Very basic products can come in below that. Anything with electronics, regulated materials, or high mechanical complexity often goes well above.
Prototyping and testing can be a significant variable in overall costs. A basic 3D-printed form study may cost a few hundred dollars. A functional prototype close to production quality can run into tens of thousands, depending on the size, complexity, materials, and processes required to produce and test.
Injection mould tooling is commonly required in various consumer products and again can vary greatly due to specific part design. A straightforward single-cavity tool for a simple part starts around $10,000 to $15,000 AUD. Multi-cavity tooling for more complex parts can run $50,000 or more.
Getting from idea to first production run, covering design, prototyping, tooling, and initial stock, commonly requires $80,000 to $200,000 or more. Not every project needs all of that at once. Phasing development intelligently helps manage cash flow. But going into the product development process with a realistic understanding of estimated overall project cost can reduce costly surprises and give you time to manage funding.
How long the process takes
A simple product from concept to production-ready files typically takes three to six months. If it has more mechanical complexity, requires electronic and software development, and/or regulatory testing, six to twelve months+ is more realistic.
What can add to overall project timelines often isn't the design or manufacturing lead times. It's slow decisions, scope changes, extra prototype iterations to resolve unforeseen issues. A clear, aligned brief at the start makes a noticeable difference to how a project runs.
What kind of help do you actually need?

Frequently asked questions
Can’t I just take a product photo or sketch directly to a manufacturer?
No. Even if you provide manufacturers with a detailed design that hasn't had DFM principles applied, most manufacturers will ask you to make changes to be feasible for their processes anyway. Production-ready files require input from an experienced industrial designer.
Can I develop a product on a limited budget?
Yes. At Concept Evolution we will do our best to work within your budget but will also be honest and upfront about estimated project costs. If these fall outside your personal budget, we can assist you with exploring different funding options to assist with product development costs.
Do I need a patent before starting?
Not necessarily. In many product categories, speed to market and execution matter more than IP protection. If your product has genuine novelty and you're planning to scale, a provisional application through IP Australia costs relatively little and locks in your priority date. How do I know if my idea is ready to take to a designer?

If changes are relatively minor, that shouldn’t significantly impact the estimated cost, but major changes to manufacturing method, or core functionality may alter the cost more significantly, but we would always consult you regarding any increased costs before proceeding.
