The six main types, what the hardware has to handle, what each costs in Australia, and what can blow the budget

You are planning a screen installation and the quotes coming back vary wildly. Or a supplier has specified something, and you have no way of judging whether it is suitable for your needs.


The digital signage category covers everything from a single screen above a counter to a perimeter LED system at a stadium, which can explain why the pricing can fluctuate so much.


This article covers what digital signage actually includes, six common types, what each costs in Australia, and what can blow a signage budget.


What is Digital Signage?


Digital signage is any screen-based display system used to communicate information, advertising or instructions in a public or commercial space.


That covers a wide range of installations:

  • Menu boards in quick service restaurants

  • Promotional displays at retail point of sale

  • Departure boards at airports and stations

  • Wayfinding screens in hospitals and shopping centres

  • Corporate lobby and meeting room displays

  • Digital directory boards in office buildings

  • Large format LED screens and perimeter ribbons at sports venues


They share a purpose. But they may not share much in terms of hardware, cost or complexity.


Why It Is a System, Not a Screen


The display is the visible part. It is usually the smaller part of the project.


A working installation also needs:

  • A media player or PC generating the output

  • A content management system deciding what plays and when

  • A network connection for updating content remotely

  • A mount or enclosure holding everything in place

  • Power and data cabling, often installed specifically for the purpose

  • Thermal management, which becomes critical in enclosed or outdoor installations

  • Weatherproofing and impact resistant glazing for outdoor and public sites

  • Access provision so the hardware can be serviced without dismantling the installation

This is the most consistent reason signage projects run over budget. The screen gets specified carefully and the mounting, cabling, enclosure, software and maintenance get estimated loosely.


On a simple indoor installation, the display might be half the project cost. On a custom outdoor kiosk, it is often less than a fifth.


A Note on Terminology


Three terms get used loosely in quotes and tender documents.

Digital signage usually means the whole system, including hardware, software and content.


DOOH, or digital out of home, refers specifically to advertising networks where screen time is sold to advertisers. All DOOH is digital signage. All digital signage is not DOOH.


AV integration describes the trade that installs and commissions the system. An AV integrator supplies and connects the equipment. They do not generally design custom enclosures or purpose-built hardware, which is a separate discipline.


Worth clarifying which one a supplier means before comparing quotes, because the scope of each is quite different.


The Six Common Types of Digital Signage


Grouped by what the hardware has to cope with rather than by screen size.


1. Indoor Commercial Displays


What it is. A commercial grade panel on a wall or stand in a controlled indoor environment.


Typical applications:

  • Retail promotional displays

  • Corporate lobbies and meeting rooms

  • Waiting areas and reception spaces

  • Internal communications screens


What the hardware has to handle. Continuous operation, usually 16 hours a day or more. Ambient light from windows and lighting. Ventilation.

2. Digital Menu Boards


What it is. A set of screens, usually two to five, presenting menu content above a service counter.


Typical applications:

  • Quick service restaurants

  • Cafes and bars

  • Service counters and ticketing windows

What the hardware has to handle. Heat and grease in kitchen-adjacent locations. Long operating hours. Frequent content changes. Alignment across multiple screens, which is a mounting problem more than a display problem.

3. Interactive Kiosks and Touchscreens


What it is. A freestanding or wall-mounted unit with a touch interface, usually in a custom enclosure.


Typical applications:

  • Retail self service and product lookup

  • Ticketing and check-in

  • Building directories with search

  • Ordering terminals

What the hardware has to handle. Thousands of touches a day, which puts the load on the glass, the bezel seal and the structure behind it. Heat from a display running in an enclosed housing. Vandalism and misuse in unattended locations. Accessibility requirements for reach and screen height. Service access without removing the unit.


Typical cost: $15,000 to $80,000 per unit depending on design complexity and quantity Typical enclosure life: 5-10 years or more if designed for it, outlasting several display generations.

4. Wayfinding and Directory Displays


What it is. Screens presenting navigation and directory information, often integrated into architecture.


Typical applications:

  • Hospitals and healthcare campuses

  • Shopping centres

  • Universities and large office buildings

  • Transport interchanges


What the hardware has to handle. Integration with building management or scheduling systems. Materials and finishes that suit the environment, which in healthcare means surfaces that tolerate cleaning chemicals and meet infection control expectations. 


Enclosures that read as part of the building rather than added to it.

5. Outdoor High Brightness Displays


What it is. A weatherproof display with a panel bright enough to remain readable in direct sunlight.


Typical applications:

  • Drive through menu boards

  • Transport platforms and shelters

  • Building exteriors and forecourts

  • Outdoor advertising enclosures


What the hardware has to handle. Sunlight readability, which requires a high brightness panel and adds heat. Solar gain on the enclosure itself, which in an Australian summer can push internal temperatures well beyond what electronics tolerate. Weather sealing that still allows airflow or heat exchange. Impact resistant glazing. Condensation management.


Thermal design is the difference between a unit that runs for years and one that shuts down every January.

6. Large Format LED Walls and Ribbons


What it is. Modular LED panels assembled into large displays, including perimeter ribbon systems at venues.


Typical applications:

  • Sports stadiums and arenas

  • Building facades

  • Major retail and event spaces

  • Transport concourses

What the hardware has to handle. Structural loading and wind loading, which usually requires engineering certification. Custom fabrication for the support structure. LED driver electronics and power distribution. Heat across a large assembly. Access for servicing individual modules. Impact resistance at pitch level in sporting venues.


Typical cost: $100,000 to $500,000 or more, depending on area, pitch and structure Typical LED module life: 60,000 to 100,000 hours.


Why the Enclosure Matters More Than People Expect


Most content written about digital signage comes from software companies, so it concentrates on content management, scheduling and analytics. The physical hardware gets treated as a commodity. Buy a commercial display, add a media player, find a bracket.


That is fine for a screen on an office wall. It stops working when the application is demanding.


The recurring hardware problems are consistent:


Heat. A display generates heat, an enclosure traps it, and Australian sun adds more. Electronics fail early or shut down protectively. Thermal design is the most common cause of outdoor signage failure and is often overlooked or misunderstood.


Service access. If replacing a media player means taking the unit off the wall, that job gets deferred, and a screen stays dark for weeks. Access should be considered from the start of the design process, not after the installation.


Materials and finish. A hospital, a beachside transport shelter and a corporate lobby need different materials, and coatings that might suit one, but will fail in another.


Mounting and structure. Anything large, indoors or outdoors generally needs structural engineering, and in many cases certification. This is frequently discovered late.


Appearance. An enclosure designed for the space looks intentional. One assembled from generic parts looks bolted on, which matters most in exactly the environments where clients care about how things look.

These are industrial design and engineering problems rather than AV problems. They are also the ones that determine whether an installation is still working properly in five years.

1. Design Review


We start by reviewing your product idea from several perspectives, to refine the design brief and guide concept development.

On signage projects this stage is where the site conditions get established. Orientation and sun exposure, ambient temperature, available power and data, mounting substrate, service access and any structural or compliance requirements.


2. Concept Development


We take the refined brief and explore multiple design directions in both form and function, using:

  • Concept sketches

  • 3D CAD modelling

  • Detailed 3D product visualisations

Visualisations matter on signage work, because stakeholders usually need to see how a unit will sit in a space before approving it.


3. Prototype and Test


Prototypes range from basic form studies, which assess size and shape, through to high-fidelity working prototypes.


Our workshop is equipped to assemble and test prototypes, including in-house 3D printing for rapid prototyping, which makes evaluating a design fast and economical. For specific materials, processes or treatments, we use our network of manufacturing partners.


For signage this often includes thermal testing on a first enclosure, since the difference between calculation and reality tends to show up here.


4. Production


When you approve the final prototype, the product is manufactured and goes to market.


It is optimised for efficient mass production through design for manufacturing, and to comply with the relevant regulations and standards.

Digital Signage in Sydney and Australia


Australian conditions place real demands on outdoor signage. Summer ambient temperatures, high UV, coastal salt exposure and sunlight bright enough to wash out an underspecified panel all affect hardware selection and enclosure design.


Equipment specified for milder northern hemisphere conditions sometimes underperforms here, particularly on thermal headroom.

Locally designed and fabricated enclosures also make service and warranty work considerably simpler, since replacement panels and parts do not need to be shipped internationally when something fails in a public-facing installation.
