
What is industrial design?
A plain-English guide
We get this question a lot. Usually from someone who has an idea for a product and is trying to work out who they're actually supposed to call.
Industrial design is the professional practice of creating products that are functional, manufacturable, and something people actually want to use. That's what the discipline covers. It sits behind most physical objects you've ever owned. Your kettle. The running shoe you bought last year. The barcode scanner at the supermarket checkout. Someone figured out what those things should look like, how they should feel to hold, how they'd be made, before they existed. That's the job.
We've been doing it for over 20 years, across projects as diverse as outdoor barbecues, commercial digital signage, backpacks, and street furniture for public spaces. The materials change, the manufacturing methods change, the client's budget changes. The core discipline doesn't.
What industrial design actually means
Here's a definition worth keeping: industrial design is the practice of making products that are functional, manufacturable, and something people actually want to use. All three at once. That last part gets skipped more than you'd think.
The "industrial" doesn't mean heavy industry. It refers to production at scale, meaning a product that can be made more than once with consistent results. That's all. It applies just as much to a piece of consumer hardware made in small batches as it does to something produced in the millions.
While it can often overlap and intersect with other design disciplines, such as graphic design, Industrial design is typically physical and tangible. You can hold the thing when it's done.
The Design Institute of Australia formally recognises industrial design as a core professional design discipline, alongside architecture and graphic design. This means there are professional standards the field holds itself to.
What industrial designers actually do: the process
The work starts before anything gets drawn.
Before a designer puts pencil to paper or opens CAD software, there's a critical phase of genuinely trying to understand the problem. Who is this for? How will they use it? What does it need to cost? What manufacturing process makes sense given the volumes involved? Are there compliance requirements?
Once the design brief is clearly defined, concept development begins. Usually exploring multiple directions via different techniques including concept sketching and 3D CAD modelling. This is an exciting phase for both designers and clients because they can see their ideas and different possibilities taking shape.
From there, a chosen concept gets further refined via more detailed 3D CAD modelling. The 3D CAD model isn't just a visual. It's what physical prototypes get made from. Engineering drawings can be produced from it and 3D printers and other CNC machines directly use 3D CAD files. When you get quotes from manufacturers, those quotes will be directly based on the 3D CAD model and/or 2D engineering drawings derived from it. Therefore, getting the model right is critical work that everything downstream depends on.
Prototyping follows and often requires multiple iterations to get right. But each iteration is an important step in the development of the product and can identify key areas for improvement that are not evident from the 3D CAD model alone. Eg a part that doesn't fit together the way it does in the CAD model. Or a grip that just doesn’t feel right in the hand. That's what the prototype phase is for. Transforming the CAD model into tactile objects to evaluate what does/doesn't work to optimise the product and reduce risk before committing to production.
Once prototyping phase is complete, the design gets further refined and optimised specifically for efficient and economical manufacture. This is called design for manufacture (DFM), and it's where a designer who understands manufacturing processes shows their true value to the client. Experienced DFM decisions made during the design process can save significant time and money production.
At the end of the DFM process, the designer hands over a complete package: CAD files, engineering drawings, tolerances, material specifications. Essentially everything a manufacturer needs to produce the product.

Industrial design and mechanical engineering are not the same thing
Some people use these terms interchangeably. It's understandable, but they refer to different skill sets.
Mechanical engineering is about how things work internally. Structural loads. Mechanisms. How materials behave under stress. The physics.
Industrial design needs to include the internal workings of a product, but is also heavily based on how things work from the outside, from the user's perspective. The shape, the way it sits in your hand, the materials you can feel, what the product communicates before someone even uses it.
Problems can often arise when design and engineering are treated as separate sequential steps, where design gets "handed off" to engineering, which then sends back changes, which design has to accommodate. Who actually needs an industrial designer
Honestly, a wider range of people than most expect.
We work with private inventors who have a product idea and have never brought anything to market before. We also work with startups who have a rough concept that needs to be developed to a point where it can actually be manufactured and sold, and with established businesses that need design or engineering support for something specific, whether that's a new product line or an update to something existing. Manufacturers may also engage us when they need design services for a specific project they're developing for a client.

You don't need a finished idea to have a useful conversation with a designer. We talk to people regularly who show up with a sketch on paper, or nothing physical at all, just a problem in their head that they're trying to solve. The earlier a designer is involved, the more positive influence they can have on cost and outcome. Decisions made in the early stages of a project tend to have a significant impact on overall project success.
What does it cost in Australia?
This is very hard to answer in a general way, as every project is unique and there are such a wide range of variables that impact on price.
Rough orientation: Concept development only (sketches, basic CAD, some initial renders) typically falls somewhere between $5,000 and $15,000. Full industrial design through to production-ready CAD and engineering drawings is more commonly in the range of $10,000 to $60,000 or above, depending on complexity. Prototyping costs also vary widely based on project specifics and can range from a few hundred dollars for a basic 3D-printed form model to tens of thousands for something that's close to production quality and fully functional.
What drives the cost is mainly: how complex the product is, how many iterations prototyping takes, what manufacturing processes are involved, and whether the project also involves other professional services, eg engineering. A product with moving parts, electronic integration, or regulatory compliance requirements will cost more to develop than a simpler consumer object.

How long does development take?
It varies significantly, but here's how we'd generally frame it.
A relatively simple consumer product, from initial concept to production-ready files, tends to take somewhere between three and six months. Add mechanical complexity or electronics integration and you're looking at six to twelve months. Regulated products, medical devices in particular, take longer still because compliance testing and documentation have timelines that can't be rushed.
The thing that delays projects most often isn't the design work itself. It's decisions that get deferred, scope that changes mid-project, and approvals from the client side that take longer than expected. A clear brief at the start, with the key decisions made before work begins, makes a noticeable difference to how smoothly things run.
Frequently asked questions
Is industrial design the same as product design?
In Australia, yes, broadly. The terms get used interchangeably by most people working in the field. "Product design" occasionally gets used for digital product design (apps, interfaces) but in a manufacturing and production context they mean the same thing.
Do I need a finished idea before reaching out?
No. Some of the most interesting projects we've worked on started with nothing more than a problem description. Industrial designers are there to help develop ideas, not just execute fully formed ones.
