The client
Cardiac Responder has saved 70 lives since 2009. They provide patented defibrillator monitoring technology with 24-hour rescue system protection — not just the hardware, but the full service around it. With over 300 clients across Australia, they hold a position no other provider does: full-service defibrillator protection that includes remote monitoring, response coordination, and equipment maintenance.
Their brief to Concept Evolution was to design a kiosk enclosure worthy of that system. Something visible enough to find in a crowded space, secure enough to protect vital life-saving equipment, and durable enough to stand in an outdoor environment for years.
What the ZAPSTAND needed to do
This wasn't a cosmetic product design project. The enclosure had a specific job to do in a high-stakes context.
In an emergency, someone needs to locate the kiosk, access the defibrillator quickly, and use it reliably. The unit needs to be immediately recognisable. The defibrillator access door needs to be obvious and fast to open. The intercom and camera need to work reliably. And the whole system needs to operate year round outdoors in harsh Australian conditions — UV, rain, high temperatures — without degrading.
The brief also called for a double-sided configuration, with either an illuminated poster or digital panel mounted on the “B-side’ to allow for public messaging and/or advertising opportunities.
Enclosure and structure
The ZAPSTAND is built on a fully welded steel chassis with Dulux Duratec powder coat finish. Welded chassis construction (rather than bolted assemblies) produces a more rigid, weather-resistant unit that is better suited to the harsh outdoor conditions. The Duratec finish provides better UV resistance and colour vibrancy than standard powder coat finishes.
The construction is deliberately robust. Public infrastructure takes abuse, and a unit that houses life-saving equipment needs to hold up to it.
Front face features
The front of the ZAPSTAND carries the primary user-facing elements:
Illuminated header signage on both sides for visibility from distance
Surveillance cameras on both sides
Illuminated branding panel

Illuminated poster panel (with an optional upgrade to a 46" LCD screen)
Stainless steel intercom panel with button, speaker, and microphone
Alarmed defibrillator access door with electronic lock and automatic closure
Optional air conditioning unit for heating or cooling in extreme environments
The alarmed access door deserves a note. The design ensures that the defibrillator is accessible to a rescuer in seconds, while the alarm system deters tampering and alerts Cardiac Responder's monitoring network the moment the door opens. The electronic lock and automatic closure mean the door returns to a secure state without any manual action from the rescuer.

Deployment in the field
The ZAPSTAND has been deployed in both Australia and United States through Cardiac Responder's client network, including installations for Northern Beaches Council in Sydney. Council parks, public plazas, and high-traffic pedestrian areas represent the core use case — places where sudden cardiac events can occur and where response time matters.
The illuminated header and emergency signage ensure the unit is visible from a distance, day and night. The intercom connects directly to Cardiac Responder's 24-hour monitoring and response coordination service.
What made this project work
Cardiac Responder needed a design partner who understood both the functional requirements and the manufacturing implications of producing a unit at scale. The enclosure had to be manufacturable consistently, maintainable in the field, and certifiable for use in outdoor public spaces.
The approach Concept Evolution took was grounded in design for manufacture — building a product that worked well on paper and that could be built the same way each time. The fully welded chassis, the choice of materials, the access door mechanism — all of these were designed with ease of assembly and long-term reliability and serviceability in mind.
